Welcome to Fontys International Summer School (FISS),
the international learning community for active people!
The International Summer School of Fontys University of Applied Sciences offers an extensive programme for current Fontys students, future Fontys students and people who would simply like to increase their educational level with an additional certificate.
There will be many opportunities for learning on the one hand, but also excellent opportunities for mingling with other students and gaining new insights on the other hand.
Every week there will be a Happy Hour!

The programme in detail
English: 3 weeks
Prerequisites: enthusiasm and relatively good command of English
In week 1 the focus will be on English grammar and writing skills. Week 2 builds on what you have learned in week 1 and will improve your English oral skills mainly dealing with meetings and presentations in English. Week 3 improved your negotiation skills. The course will be taught in English. Week 2 and week 3 will end in an examination.
Students will receive a certificate.
Dutch: 3 weeks
Prerequisites: none, but enthusiasm goes a long way!
This course will teach you basic Dutch skills. It is especially useful for future Fontys students as this will provide them with credits they would otherwise have to gain in the first year. It will also ease the start of their study course abroad. You can choose if you want to follow the English or German taught course. Week 2 will end in an examination. There is also an option to continue in the 3rd week, where the focus will be mainly on speaking skills. At the end of the week students will have to do a short presentation in Dutch.
Students will receive a certificate.
Academic
The school is founded and funded by Fontys University of Applied Sciences. With 36,000 students, Fontys ranks among the biggest universities in The Netherlands. The University is recognized and supervised by the Dutch Ministry of Education and are fully accredited by the NVAO (The Accreditation Organization of the Netherlands and Flanders). With this the University meets the nation’s educational standards, which are among the highest in the world.
Summer
The school is held 2 August – 20 August 2010, which is the height of summertime when The Netherlands are at its best: lots of sunshine, not too much rain, 20 – 30 ºC (68 - 86 ºF). You’ll see the Dutch sipping their lattes on sidewalk cafes, roller-skating through the countryside, or enjoying outdoor music festivals. No worries, for sure you’ll get your share of it.
School
You’ll learn lots. You’ll have to attend at least 80% of all learning activities.
To be eligible for the Fontys International Summer School, you need to meet the following requirements:

- age between 16-87
- a basic level of English or German
- availability to attend the entire three-week program
- sufficient funding
The majority of participants will be between 20-30 years of age, with some younger and some older students.
